Let Lamentations 3:1-24 help ypu to trust in the God's loving faithfulness.
There are times when it seems nothing is going right for us: ‘I am the man who has seen affliction...’(1-3). In such times, we must remember this: ‘The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases. His mercies never come to an end’. When we find ourselves in circumstances of great distress, we must learn to look beyond the things that are happening to us. We must learn to look to the Lord and say, ‘Great is Your faithfulness’. |

Let Psalm 103 help you to praise the Lord.
‘Praise the Lord’(1-2,20-22). Let’s praise Him for His ‘steadfast love’. He is ‘abounding in steadfast love’(8). How are we to respond to His ‘steadfast love’? Are we to say, ‘God loves me. I can do what I like’? No! We must not think like this. We’re not to say, ‘I’ll keep on sinning. God will keep on forgiving’(Romans 6:1-2). God’s Word tells us something very different. Loved by God, we learn to love Him. |

Pentecost +19: Lamentations 1:1-6; Lamentations 3:19-26 (or Psalm 137); 2 Timothy 1:1-14; Luke 17:5-10
Jerusalem had fallen into hard times. Her sad situation is described for us in Lamentations 1:1 – “she who once was great among the nations... has now become a slave.” In their difficult and distressing situation, God’s people were forced to ask the question: “How can we sing the songs of the Lord while in a foreign land?”(Psalm 137:4). |

Nehemiah
1:1-2:18 - ‘You see the trouble we are in’ - How do you react when the going gets tough? Do you collapse in despair and succeed only in making your troubles seem even bigger than they really are? There is a better way of dealing with our problems. Believing that ‘the hand of his God was upon him for good’, Nehemiah looks at the problem - ‘Jerusalem lies in ruins’ - and sets about solving it - ‘Come. let us build the wall of Jerusalem’ (2:17-18). |

Hosea
1:1-3:5 - ‘Hosea’ means ‘salvation’. Married to ‘an adulterous wife’, Hosea spoke with great compassion to ‘the land’ which was ‘guilty of the vilest adultery in departing from the Lord’ (1:2). He brought God’s Word of love to the people: ‘I will show My love to the one I called, “Not My loved one”’. He spoke to them of the life-changing power of God’s love: ‘I will say to those called, “Not My people”, and they will say, “You are My God”’ (2:23). |

Genesis 24
The servant was sent on a mission. He was 'to get a wife for ... Isaac' (4). When Christ entered Jerusalem (Matthew 21:1-11), He was on a mission. He had come for His Bride, the Church (Ephesians 5:25; Revelation 21:2-3). The servant was not to 'get a wife ... from ... the Canaanites' (3). The Church is to be made 'holy ... a radiant Church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless' (Ephesians 5:26-27). |

Genesis 32-33
Chapter 32 Jacob prepares to meet Esau (1-21), From verses 9-12, we learn some important spiritual lessons. (a) Make sure that God is your God, and not only the God of your father and grandfather (9). (b) Confess your unworthiness of 'all the steadfast love and all the faithfulness' of God (10). (c) Pray to God for salvation - 'Save me I pray ... ' (11). (d) Stand on the promises of God - 'You have said ... ' (12). |

Genesis 37-39
Chapter 37 Here, we have human sin and divine grace. We see jealousy (11) and its effects: 'where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice' (James 3:16). There is God working out His purpose: 'you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good' (50:20). |

Genesis 46-50
Chapter 46 Jacob goes to Egypt. There were three factors in Jacob's guidance. * Inner desire - He wanted to see Joseph. * Circumstances - Joseph wanted to see him and his sons were going to take him. * God's Word - God told him to go. With God's command there was also His promise - 'I will there make of you a great nation'. There was no need for fear because God would be with him (3-4). |

Exodus 35-37
Chapters 35-36 The work of God is shared by many different people with many different gifts. The work is done according to (a) the Lord's command (35:1, 4, 10; 36:1, 5); (b) heartfelt obedience (35:21; 36:3, 5-7); (c) the God-given abilities (35:24-25; 36:2, 4, 8). There is something for 'everyone' to do - everyone 'whose heart is stirred, whose spirit is moved' (35:21). Many gifts are needed (35:31-35). |

2 Samuel 1-2
Chapter 1 'How are the mighty fallen!' (19, 25, 27). The tragedy of Saul was there for all to see. He had made a right mess of things! What are we to think when we read of this tragic figure? He started out so well. He ended so badly. There were high hopes - but it all came to nothing. Do we not see ourselves in Saul? - This could happen to me, if I'm not careful. The danger signs are there. Satan is at hand. He is ready to sweep in. |

2 Samuel 6-7
Chapter 6 'When she saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, she despised him in her heart' (16). Michal was a very angry young woman. Her husband had embarrassed her and she didn't like it! What had David done to deserve this? - 'I will celebrate before the Lord' (21). This is really quite pathetic. God's children are learning to 'worship Him in Spirit and in truth' (John 4:23-24). In comes 'the stiff upper lip brigade'. |

2 Chronicles 1-6
1:1-2:18 - ‘Give me wisdom’ (1:10). What is the greatest wisdom of all? - It is the ‘wisdom’ which leads to ‘salvation through faith in Christ Jesus’. Where do we find this wisdom? - Read ‘the Holy Scriptures’. Ask God for wisdom - ‘Open my eyes that I may see the wonderful truths in Your Word’. Ask the question concerning salvation - ‘What must I do to be saved?’. |

Nehemiah 8-9
8:1-9:5 - What happens when God’s people ‘gather together’ (8:1)? - (a) We hear the Word of the Lord (8:2-3,8). We come to the Lord’s House, seeking a fresh understanding of His Word. We look to the Lord, speaking through His Word, to fill us ‘with great joy’ (8:12). (b) We thank God for His Son, our Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ (8:13-18). |

Nehemiah 10-13
10:1-39 - God is calling us to commit our lives to Him. At the heart of our commitment to the Lord, there must be worship: ‘We will not neglect the House of our God’ (39). ‘Worship God’ (Revelation 19:10). This is our reason for coming to the Lord’s House. We come to worship Him. Our worship is to be more than mere words. We worship God when we bring our offerings to Him. God’s people brought ‘the tithe’ (tenth) to Him (37). |

Lamentations
1:1-22 - Jerusalem had fallen into hard times - ‘she who once was great among the nations... has now become a slave’ (1). The explanation for this sad situation was not hard to find - ‘Jerusalem has sinned greatly and so has become unclean...’ (8-9). Could things be turned around? Could there once again be blessing? There was a way back to God - the way of being honest before Him. |

Isaiah 62-63
62:1-12 - God has given us ‘a new Name’. It is ‘the Name which is above every name’, the Name of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ (2; Philippians 2:9-11). Christ loves us. He has given Himself for us. He calls us His ‘Bride’ (Ephesians 5:25-27; 2 Corinthians 11:2; Revelation 21:2,9). Through faith in Christ, we have become ‘the Holy People’. Through Him, we are ‘the Redeemed of the Lord’. We have been ‘Sought After’ by the Lord. |

Jeremiah 49-50
49:1-22 - ‘Afterwards I will restore the fortunes...’ (6). Sometimes, when you’re going through a particularly difficult time, you may wonder, ‘Will this ever end?’. God speaks to us His Word of encouragement. There will be an ‘afterwards’. There will be a ‘restoration of our fortunes’. ‘The Lord will not cast us off for ever. Though He brings grief, He will show compassion according to His steadfast love. |
